12 Angry Men is one of the greatest films of the 50's- if you were to attempt to make a sort list yourself (assuming you've seen a good amount of films from the 50's ) and intelligently approached it, or better yet look at critics list than you would more than likely see 12 A.M. listed pretty regularly by most in a top 25, shit even a decent top 10 list for it's decade. Their is a reason for that, it is not a over hyped film by any means. (But i don't agree popularity necessarily dictates quality- ex Shawshank Redemption is highly OVERrated by far too many- like on the IMDB boards and/or people who barely watch movies or people that will never watch a foreign language with subtitle .)


That decade was huge in quality as far as cinema goes. Trying to narrow down a greatest list of films from the 50's is like trying to do that for the 70's. That movie is a landmark in american cinema in it's own way, which is why it has grown & garnered more appreciation throughout the yrs.


It is also noteworthy as far as directorial debut's go for a 1st time filmmaker (The late great Sidney Lumet).
