What should’ve been the celebratory nightcap for not only Drake, but also the city of Toronto and hip-hop, too, turned deadly after two people were reportedly shot and killed at an OVO Fest afterparty early Tuesday morning. Three others were hospitalized after they were critically injured in the shooting, which occurred at a club billed as the “official OVO fest afterparty, hosted by Drake with music by Charlie B,†per Billboard.
Toronto Police Superintendent Frank Bergen, of 14 Division, told media that “this is a sporadic shooting that did occur just before 3:30 this morning at 15 Saskatchewan. It’s the Muzik Nightclub. A well-run event with lots of police officers in and around the area, culminating on a large evening event that occurred over at the OVO Festival.â€
“What occurred originally in the bar area had spilled out into the streets so south and north of this area we do have three separate crimes scenes,†Bergen said.
“At this point we do know for certain that one or two [shootings] were in the nightclub and we believe the others were outside of that area. This is all unfolding now and we’re doing our investigation.â€
Neither Drake nor October’s Very Own have commented on the incident at this time, but it definitely puts a damper on what was seen as an otherwise successful event.
In its sixth year, the annual event brings a list of stars — ranging from Kanye West and Jay Z, to Pharrell and P. Diddy — over the years and has grown in attendance, from 16,000 in 2013 to 32,000 in 2014 to an expected 50,000 for 2015. As well, the festival focuses all of the rap world’s attention on Toronto.
