So you can write an ill 16. You've got "crazy wordplay" and "dope punchlines".
Hell, you've got a MIXTAPE coming out! You're a fledgling musician....wait NO you're the fuck NOT.
I love hip hop, grew up on the stuff. Its a real art form that requires real skill. It just gets to me when people think that writing bars=being a musician. The voice IS an instrument when used as such (singing, mouth wah etc). SPEAKING, though very powerful, is NOT making music. I have no problem with rappers calling themselves artists. I fully agree that they are the rhythmic poets of our time. And whilst spinning their tales of street smarts, nonsense and bitches...aw fuck it im done.

rappers rap in scales which compliment the backing track, theres a difference between just rapping monotone over a beat or using scales which dont fit the backing track. most pro artists either know this instinctively or have a good understanding of music theory (or both) meaning: yes, of course they are musicians.

depends on the rapper.. if a rapper has his lyric's written by somebody else and beats produced by some mainstream record exec douche then..no...

but if a rapper has a tight knit relationship with his producer...listens to the beat..determines how hes gonna rap on the beat...and goes in... then yes

i kinda agree to disagree.. while the technical term "musician" is vauge.. if a rapper has a producer who specifically makes beats for them because they know their style... then i consider them a musician.... you are making music to a beat and you are the only one on that beat... its kinda hard to explain... but its like sayin tupac/biggie/ kool g rap arn't musicians because they arnt hittin snares and scramplin mixes' while at the same time they are the only reason that beat means anything....
