I really didn't enjoy a single battle from day 1

That's cause battle rap is over. If you were there for the freestyle era you should understand. It's not like battle rap is getting worse. The artform has peaked and gone from something that's fresh and exciting to redundant and played out. There will always be enough subhumans for battle rap to have an audience but if you're a "seasoned fan" don't expect to be blown away by watching an hour long word joust. Expect to fall asleep.

Battlers don't seem to be taking the hint from crowds that they should try something new. It's been 4 years straight now of generic "barfests" where rappers make clever puns about fruits and vegetables. Hip-hop music starts new trends every year pretty much, yet battle rap just seems stuck. I figured a natural progression would have been for battlers to start switching up their flows, but this hasn't happened for whatever reason

In case you haven't noticed most current hip hop trends tend to lean away from lyricism and by lyricism I mean metaphors written at a grade 5 level. If you're suggesting battle rap should start including melodic mumbling and skirts, count me in.
