Queens is great. More multicultural than any other place in NY. Brooklyn is right there too. Both Astoria and northwest Brooklyn have become a bit yuppie but for newbies to NY, they enjoy that. The further u get away from Manhattan, the cheaper the rents. Everything is easy to get to via train and bus, so stay near mass transit, as keeping a car in NY is a headache with limited parking.

Good call, I'm used to public transportation, but nothing like all the shit ny has going on
Rocky is pretty much dead on. My advice as a New Yorker- bring lots of $ with you or don't bother coming because you'll be headed right back to wherever it is you're coming from. Hope that helps!
