Re: Is Rakim The Most Technically Sound Mc Ever

Critical Beatdown had me me like wtf is this shit
Never heard anything like it back then
Just sounded light years ahead of everything
Part of that I guess was alot of people being too influenced by kane, rakim, krs, etc. I guess
When something weird came out it was like Christmas to me
      Biz markie
De la soul and basically anything prince Paul did
      Redman first one
Even later with Wu Tang first one
Personal pick of rbx when he came out on Dre first one then his solos nobody rapped like him
      Devin
      OutKast
I can appreciate all the new music too. Not feeling most of it but at least there's some weirdo very different shit to check out from time to time.
People talk like mid 90s was golden years but alot of that shit was stale af and derivative imo great rappers of course but same subjects and production all over trying to copy the cash mixture of the minute

Too much tuff guy stuff too. Fat boys, biz markie, Beastie boys, etc. Could exist with all the gs back then and it's a shame there's not more of that that past 20 years or so.

He is one of the most overrated ever.

Death Certificate 1 of the greatest albums in Hip Hop History....

And if we talking influence...not 1 person on the West ever birthed more sons/daughters then Cube!!!!!

Some people only know him/remember him from movies though or that Don Mega bullshit at the end of his career.

I'll save that for another thread though.
I'm not saying his music is shit - but he is overrated as fuck. Without ghostwriters, godly samples and dope production he .... nevermind.
Cube was a ghostwriter for some of the biggest names on the west (Dre + Easy + King Tee + Da Lench Mob + Yoyo)....

Kam and Mack 10 wasnt writing for him like they say cuz neither was that nice if we being honest.

I never believed that shit from them....now if WC said it then maybe which might get a chuckle from folks who only know crip walking WC and never heard of the Maad Circle.
Believe what you want. He a brilliant actor though.

Trag I never really got around to getting into his discography, he always had a loyal small core fallowing that routinely brings his name up here and there in passing on certain topics. Only listened to tracks by him sporadically over the yrs but mostly stumble on him through feature spots.

L.A L.A. is prob the 1st time I took notice of him.

However If we are talking about underrated QB artists... Cormega is the one that is more deserving of praise in my mind ( you can even make a solid argument widen it to the whole east cost or ever in HipHop). Like 12 yrs ago a common answer to most underrated emcee in Hiphop use to be Az.
That becoming a reg occurrence actually worked to elevate his status to eventually become more recognized/acknowledged (They just learned about what others were stating back in 95 when Doe or Die dropped).

Point being Cormega is like top 5 most slept on emcee's ever

As far as how big of a influence Tragedy was/is on Nas's style, thats up for debate partially.
But me, personally, I would say his influence (if any ) is more unconscious/admiration, then it affecting anything he has done. iirc Nas said Tragedy was a influence on him, but I think it's more in the role along the line of how Mc Shan played a influence to Nas. Pac & Big has more of a conscious influence/impact on Nas than Tragedy- IMHO.

I think two most obvious influences that impacted him as a emcee that you can say with confidence (at least that shaped him/his rapping style early on) is Kool G and Rakim. (Limited mostly from 91 to 96).
I like modding because it gives me the illusion I have control.
