He planned on doing this from the beginning, even going so far as telling the media pool he wouldn't be there long. The protest doesn't disrespect America. The protest is the same thing America was founded on, civilians taking a stand (or knee, literally) against an authoritarian government/police force. If we had this same "suck it up" mentality in 1776 we'd all be Britts right now.
You know what's more disgusting than Athletes raising awareness against a verifiable bias in our justice system by peacefully protesting during a racist song? Spending my tax dollars for a dork that thinks homosexuality can be electrocuted out of someone to throw a temper tantrum much like that of a toddler. Though I would support them protesting the anthem because it's a racist song written by a racist person at a racist time in our history. Plus it was refused some 40 odd times before they accepted it as the anthem.

You know what a productive use of time would be? For him to stop by before the game and talk to those players. Stop by after the game and talk to those players. Figure out what he can do to help them. Stadiums provide to the community. They bring jobs and pump money into local economy. So no, it's not the same as spending $250,000 for Pence's plane ride to and from the game that he knew 100% he wouldn't be staying for.
It didn't "save money" for anyone. People that understand the protests just laugh at Pence and Trump because they're actual idiots. People that were mad about the protests didn't need Pence's temper tantrum to decide to be upset. He provided nothing of value to the situation other than costing us money.
